I've liked playing sports for as long as I can remember, and my teachers back then recommended that I play for clubs and stuff. But I kept refusing to for a while...

I tried joining this baseball team once and kept getting into arguments with the team's ace, who was already there and a lot older than me.

It was rough at first because the pitch was huge. I had to think about where everybody was positioned, and it felt like way too much for me to remember.
まずフィールドが広いし、 チームメイトや相手がどこにどういう配置でいるのか、 それを把握するのも最初は結構大変だったな

But whenever we gelled as a team, it felt like a lot of fun. That was probably why I stuck with it for so long.
だから、チームメイトとの連携がうまく決まると、 めちゃくちゃ気持ちよかった。 たぶんそれで続いたんだろうな

で、小学６年の時、最後の公式試合で 優勝候補のチームとあたって……、ボロ負けした

That team was apparently full of kids that left home just to go play soccer and train to become pros.
その優勝候補のチームってのがさ、 家族と離れて朝から晩までサッカー漬けって感じの プロを目指してるヤツがごろごろいるチームだったんだ

Yeah, I froze after I heard that too. I had no idea whatsoever.

それで、オレはそこまでやれんのかって、 わからなくなっちまったんだ

I felt like an idiot for thinking I was so good and not understanding what it meant to take the sport seriously, so I quit.
負けたこととか、本気でやってるって思いこんでたこととか、 なんかすげー自分がダサく感じちまって、 サッカーはそこでやめた

Oh, that? They were talking about doing scrims but just barely didn't have enough for two teams, so I ended up joining them.
